Ph. D. Admissions, January 2012
Applications are invited from highly motivated students for admission to the Ph.D. programme
beginning in January 2012 at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research –
Thiruvananthapuram (IISER-TVM).
Deadline for the application is 30 September 2011.
Eligibility criteria
- Biological Sciences: Candidates must satisfy any one of the following criteria to apply for
- the Ph.D. programme in the School of Biology at IISER-TVM starting from 1st January 2012.
- Masters degree in Biological/Chemical/Physical/Mathematical/ Allied Medical Sciences or aBachelor’s
- degree in Engineering or Medicine. 60% marks or equivalent is desirable.
- Qualifying in one of the following national level tests with validity as on 1st of January, 2012:
- CSIR-UGC-JRF/DBT-JRF/GATE/ICMR JRF.The second requirement (qualifying in a national test) is waived for applicants interested in pursuing a
- Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolution. Selection procedure:
- All shortlisted candidates are required to appear for a written aptitude test. The written test will be in
- multiple choice format. The questions will include topics in Ecology and Evolution at Bachelor’s and
- Master’s level for candidates opting for ecology and Evolution. The test for other areas of
- Biological Sciences
- , will include topics in these areas at Bachelor’s and Master’s level. Questions at the plus two level in
- Mathematics, Statistics, Physics and Chemistry are common to candidates opting for Ecology as
- well as other areas of Biology.
- Candidates can appear for ONLY ONE of these written aptitude tests.
- Only candidates who qualify the written aptitude test will appear for an interview. Research Areas
- :Biochemistry, Ecology and Evolution, Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic Cell Biology, Genetics and
- Genomics, Microbiology, Plant Biology, Structural Biology
Mere fulfilling the eligibility criterion does not entitle a candidate to be called for the interview.
- Chemical Sciences: Masters degree in Chemistry with 60% marks or equivalent is desirable.
- Candidates should qualify CSIR-UGC-JRF/GATE with validity as on 1st of January 2012. Previous
- research experience and quality publications will be considered as an added qualification.Mere fulfilling the eligibility criterion does not entitle a candidate to be called for the interview.
- Physical Sciences: Masters degree in Physical Sciences, Engineering or Technology in areas
- closely related to the interests of the physics faculty at IISER TVM. 60% marks or equivalent
- is desirable. Qualifying in one of the following national level tests with validity as on 1st of
- January 2012: GATE/CSIR-UGC-JRF. Applicants with M. Tech need a GATE score valid as of
- 1st January 2011.Mere fulfilling the eligibility criterion does not entitle a candidate to be called for the interview.
- Mathematical Sciences:Candidates must satisfy any one of the following criterion to apply for the Ph.D. programmein the School of Mathematics at IISER-TVM starting from 1st January 2012.
- Master’s degree in Engineering / Technology in a relevant area with desired CPI of 6.5 (or 60% of marks)
- with valid GATE score as on 1st January 2011.
- Master’s degree in Mathematics / Statistics / in a relevant area of science with desired CP
- I of 6.5 (or 60% of marks) and a valid CSIR-UGC-JRF/NBHM/GATE as on 1st January 2012.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology in a relevant area with a desired CPI of 7.0
- (or 65% of marks), an appearance in the Indian National Math Olympiad (INMO) in class XI
- or XII, and a valid CSIR-UGC-JRF/NBHM/GATE as on 1st January 2012.
Selection Procedure for mathematical sciences:Shortlisted candidates will be called for both the written test and interview. The final selectionwill be solely based on the performance in the written test and interview.Mere fulfilling the eligibility criterion does not entitle a candidate to be called for the test and interview.Research Areas:(a) Stochastic Process (b) Stochastic Partial Differential Equations (c) Mathematical Finance(d) Financial Engineering (e) Mathematical Fluid Dynamics (f) Number theory (g) Combinatorics(h) Graph Theory
