IIT PATNA PHD ADMISSION 2011

Applications are invited for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programme, starting in July 2011

The Institute admits Ph.D. students under the following categories:
1.1   REGULAR and FULL-TIME
A student in this category works full-time for her/his PhD degree.
Eligibility Criteria for Admission in to Ph.D. Programme
A.1 PhD in Engineering
In all the disciplines, the upper age limit is 28 years (B.Tech./B.E./M.Sc./MA/MCA/MBA) and 32 years
(M.Tech./M.E./M.S./M.Phil.) and is applicable only for candidates applying in Regular and Full time
category (Institute Fellows).
For admission to the PhD Programme in  Engineering department, a candidate must satisfy one of the
following criteria:
A.1.1 Candidates having M.Tech./M.E. degree in a Engineering/Technology, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or
60% of marks.
A.1.2 Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology (from any Institute other than IITs) in a relevant area
with a minimum CPI of 8.0 or 75% of marks.
A.1.3. Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum
CPI of 7.0.A.1.4. Master’s degree in Science from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a
minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70%.
A.2  PhD in Science
For admission to the PhD Programme in Science departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following
criteria:
A.2.1 Master’s degree in Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
A.2.2  Master’s degree in Science/Engineering/Technology in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or
60% of marks.
A.2.3 Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a
relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
A.2.4 Bachelor’s degree in a related area in Engineering/Technology (from any Institute other than IITs/IISc)
in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 8.0 or 75% of marks.
A.3 PhD in Humanities and Social Sciences
For admission to the PhD Programme in the department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), a
candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:
A.3.1 Master’s degree in Arts/Commerce/Science in a relevant area with a minimum of  55% marks or
equivalent.
A.3.2 Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or
60% marks.
A.3.3 Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI
of 7.0.
A.3.4 Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology (from any Institute other than IITs/IISc) in a relevant
area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 80% marks.



Filled in application forms complete with copies of mark sheets/certificates and other testimonials  (both
sides)  and a Demand Draft for  Rs.200/- for General/ OBC candidates and  Rs.100/- for SC/ST/PD
candidates drawn in any nationalized bank and payable at Patna in favour of IIT Patna should be sent to
the Assistant Registrar, Indian Institute of Technology Patna, Patliputra Colony, Patna – 800 013, Bihar,
to reach on or before 29
th
April 2011. The words “Application for Ph.D. admission in the Department of
_________” should be written on the top of the envelope for sending the completed form.
Candidates applying for more than one department should submit a separate application for each
department.
Selection:
The Institute reserves the right to call a limited number of candidates for written test or/ and interview, based
on performance in GATE/NET, grades/marks in the qualifying examination, etc.

H.R.I PHD ADMISSION 2011 NOTIFICATION

Admissions to the regular Ph.D. and the integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. programs - 2011

Appearing for the written test and interview

Students with a score of 39.00 or above in JEST 2011 are eligible to attend the written test and interview for admission to the Ph.D./Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. programs in physics at HRI. The call letter for the test and interview will soon be sent to the eligible candidates by post.
Students who have qualified the NET examinations held during 2010 (i.e., either the one held on 20 June 2010 or the one held on 19 December 2010) and have become eligible for a JRF-CSIR fellowship are also eligible to attend the written test and interview for admission to the Ph.D./Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. programs in physics at HRI.
The interviews will be held in two rounds, first during April 22-24 and again during May 19-21. The eligible candidates can choose to attend either round of interviews, based on their convenience.

IISER MOHALI SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAMME 2011

Applications are invited for Summer Research Program 2011 at IISER Mohali. Students completing first year of their MSc program or those completing 2nd year/3rd year of BSc, will be able to spend 2 months at IISER Mohali during the summer, in order to work on specific research projects with IISER faculty.
The principle objective of the program is to provide exposure to research methodology and a research environment to bright students. This exposure to excitement in different scientific fields is expected to motivate them to take up careers in science. 
The application can be completed through a online form. While filling the form you should be careful and provide all information correctly. 
  • The last date for receiving online applications is March 25, 2011.

  • Summer students will be paid a stipend of Rs 5000/- per month and hostel accommodation (if required) will be provided on payment basis. Each summer student is required to submit a formal written report upon completion of the project.

    EARTH SYSTEM AND CLIMATE SCIENCES
    The Centre for Advanced Training in Earth System Sciences and Climate (CAT-ESSC) of the Ministry of Earth Sciences hosted by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) is looking for scientist trainees with outstanding academic background. IITM is committed to develop world class research expertise for understanding and exploring unresolved scientific issues in climate science. The other institutions under the Ministry of Earth Sciences such as IMD, NCMRWF, INCOIS, NIOT, ICMAM, CMLRE and NCAOR also specialize in different areas of earth system sciences and technology. The main objective of CAT-ESSC is to generate a large pool of trained and dedicated earth and earth system scientists with in-depth hands-on expertise on individual physical processes of the land, ocean, atmosphere, biosphere and cryosphere with special emphasis on climate modeling. For the motivated candidates, the training will offer considerable scope to realize their full potential in this highly challenging field. The candidates recruited will be provided this induction training extending to 18 months and on successful completion they will be placed in any one of the Institutes of the Ministry of Earth Sciences as Scientists in suitable grades (Scientist B/C) based on their basic qualifications and performance. There is option for pursuing MTech or/and PhD program before or after placement with facilities for career enhancement.

    The candidates applying for the training should posses M.Sc/MS/MTech degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences, Chemistry, Oceanography, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Applied Physics, any area of Earth Sciences or any equivalent disciplines, with Physics and Mathematics at the B.Sc level or B.Tech / B.E / M.Tech / M.E in Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Electronics or Electrical Engineering with 60% or more marks at both the graduate and post graduate level. The candidates should be CSIR National Eligibility Test (NET) or the IIT-Graduate Admission Test in Engineering (GATE) qualified. Those who are appearing for the final exams for the qualifying degree or NET/GATE may also apply subject to the condition that they produce the final certificates if and when called for the interview. The applicants should be of Indian origin and the upper age limit is fixed as 28 years (30 for MTechs) as on 31 March 2011 with relaxation as per eligibility.
    The applications received will be screened and the candidates to be called for interview will be shortlisted based on their overall merit. The interviews will be held in Pune in July 2011. Candidates called for interview will be paid sleeper class train fare. The selected candidates inducted in the training program will be paid a consolidated remuneration of Rs.25,000/- per month. Hostel facilities will be available to the trainees. The no. of trainees in the first batch is tentatively fixed as Twenty. The training programme for the selected candidates is scheduled to start by early August 2011.

    Admission is generally offered on the basis of an interview, which may be supplemented by a written test. 
    Only limited number of candidates will be invited for interview/written test, based on academic records 
    and research interest compatibility of candidates with available faculty expertise. All candidates 
    called for the Test/Interview are paid to and fro single second-sleeper class railway fare by the shortest
     route from their place of residence to the Institute/ venue of the Test / Interview. They have to produce evidence
     (railway ticket) in support of their claim.

      Areas of Research: (1) Optical Communication, Optical Fiber Components; (2) Renewable Energy Systems, Power Network and Optimal Power Flows, Wind Energy Resource Assessment; and (3) Signal Processing, Medical Image Processing

    Humanities and Social Sciences

    • Eligibility Criteria: 55% (or 6 grade point out of 10) in M.A. in Linguistics/ English with UGC/NET qualified candidates are eligible to apply.
    • Areas of Research: (1) Linguistics: Phonology, Optimality Theory, Morphology; (2) Literature: Gender Studies, Postcolonial Studies, Modern Fiction.

    General Information

    • All selected candidates who are Indian citizens and who do not receive any other scholarship or funding will be provided financial support by the Institute. Admission to reserved-category candidates will be as per Government of India notification.
    • A limited number of Research Assistantships and other financial support for attending conferences within India and abroad are available as per MHRD norms subject to the conditions prescribed in the Institute regulations.
    • At present IIT Ropar do not offer part time PhD.
    • IIT Ropar will not provide hostel accommodation to selected candidates.
